Phuphuma Love Minus is a flamboyantly, afro centric music ensemble specialising in Isicathamiya music. Rooted to the Zulu history, culture tradition and values, yet responding to the influences of modernity in a big city.
The group originates from the most rural South Africa, Kwa Ngabayela-Umsinga village in Kwazulu Natal. This powerful ensemble was formed in 2002 by the late Mr. Khetheyakhe Ngidi with an aim of teaching the important lessons of history; respect, self and social awareness, cultural identity and restoring and maintaining the legacy of South African oral history.
The group started by performing in traditional events such as weddings, harvest celebrations, and many community gatherings in Umsinga Village. In 2003 members of Phuphuma Love Minus moved to Johannesburg and affiliated in the National Iphimbo Isicathamiya music organisation led by the late Mr. Simon Ngubane. Under this organisation Phuphuma Love Minus won over a number of provincial and National competitions against other Isicathamiya music groups. Within the same period PLM managed to make successful recordings of 2 albums entitled “Imfihlakalo yezulu” and “Yithi Ojikelele” In 2010 Phuphuma Love Minus got nominated in the National South African Traditional Music Awards.
In 2008 Phuphuma Love Minus collaborated with Robyn Orlin and met Nhlanhla Mahlangu who is now the current manager through the company Song and Dance Works. That has created a unique opportunity for the ensemble to take Isicathamiya music to International stages
Since then Phuphuma Loveminus have become a frequent touring ensemble in many parts of Europe. France Belgium, Switzerland to name a few…..

Audience Responses
I had expected the group that had performed at the Centre for the Less Good Idea - the emotional intensity of that group had been extraordinary. But I enjoyed this traditional group enormously. I would have liked some of the arrangements and ensemble work to be a bit more polished and refined. Loved the constant breaking down of the barrier between audience and performers. So nice to shake hands at the end. The event stayed with me the whole of the next day
I’m very sad but I didn’t make it. Please let me know if you do another run
