Lift Club is a slice-of-life take on the lives of four diverse middle-class South Africans who commute to work together every day. Conversations they have include topics of ‘problems’ that middle-class South Africans face, from each of their perspectives; and a recent dilemma at work which causes conflict among them and exposes each individual’s unique diversity. Humorous dialogue is contrasted with moments of tension, and the simplistic development of the story is uplifted and made captivating through dynamic and physical theatre-driven directing – which creates a clear-cut fictitious world of the play. Most of the story takes place in the car over 4 days with each passenger getting a turn to be the driver. This setting is contrasted with short intervals between days, which shows each individual commencing with their usual routine at home before going to work again the next day. With the use of physical gestures, repetition and realistic dialogue; this production is a conceptual expression of the middle class experience in South Africa. Above all, and despite the moments of conflict, this narrative shows that amidst all the adversity between races, classes and genders; there are a group of people in this country that really tries to get along with one another, and enjoys doing so. This production is for anyone who can relate.
