A poignant story about a family, a father, a husband and a man who kept a secret for 60 years.

In this one-woman play based on true events, Maude excavates the life of her grandfather, Alan Sandham: She uncovers the layers of myth and memory and what he kept in the shadows.

Tracks was the commissioned work for the 2017 So Solo Festival at Wits Theatre, and ran at the National Arts Festival in 2018, as part of the STAGED Showcase presented by UJ Arts and Culture.

“The human interest of a story beautifully told holds the audience spellbound ...” -Moira Swardt, 2017

“The revelation of the secret is the nub of the play and it is evolved in layers of devastating subtlety that give voice to the depth of value in a sense of belonging... Unflinching yet vitally important in saying what it does, it is a play of this nature, crafted with a keen sense of aesthetics and a potent understanding of the magic of storytelling that makes you remember what theatre is all about.” - Robyn Sassen, 2017

“Maude courageously traverses the tracks to piece together the identity of her grandfather, Alan Sandham... It’s a big story of repression and redemption, beautifully staged and performed.” - Alastair Findlay, 2017

Audience Responses

Lovely story, well-told and well performed. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The imagery on the wall was not very visible and more a distraction than anything else. She told the story well and held the space with confidence although I think the relevance of a secret coloured life has diminished as opposed to a secret second life. A very enjoyable evening out and well done and entertaining
