The Down Second Avenue Poetry Session and Conversation
The Down Second Avenue Poetry Sessions and Conversations: Spoken word Revival is a platform for emerging and existing voices to showcase some of the country’s finest poets and wordsmiths from different corners of the cities and communities. The aim of the sessions is to create value for the artform by promoting the business of African poetry and literature in mainstream spaces and as well as reviving it back to public spaces and theatres.
The revival ceremony will take place at the POPArt Theatre, Maboneng on the 17th November 2018 and features live performances from four of best of the best underground poets namely: Sipho Ngobeni (Son of the Soil), Morwamphaka Sello, Africa Zwelibanzi and Mantala Nkaotse as unheard voices from the ancestral kraal to engage the audience with spiritual news.
The sessions were influenced by the late Prof.Es’kia Mphahlele’s book “Down Second Avenue : a tale of stories telling everyday lives of the black people of the south". This monthly sessions will ensure increased visibility for local poetry in developing an audience market and reaching out the spoken word gospel to its lovers.
