CREATURE
Man in the Moon Productions brings you Larval mask production CREATURE, here for its first run before it faces the big bad National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.
CREATURE is set on a street corner in inner city Johannesburg. Three precocious larval characters emerge from the dirt to face the noise and movement of the city around them. They must quickly acquaint themselves with the inner workings of the streets or suffer being swallowed by the beastly City of Gold.
This experimental theatre piece is born from the imagination of physical theatre practitioner Kirsten Stewart fresh from her studies at the London International School of Performing Arts (LISPA). Stewart and director Feeya Asmal, No Exit (2014) and Where the Lights Don't Go Out (2014), brings the pedagogical exploration of Jaques Le Coq and the theatrical collaboration style of South African devised theatre together to create the risk-driven and experimental mask work production CREATURE.
Through covering the facial expressions of the actor, the larval mask forces the performer to heighten their senses and presence in the space. Come see these blind, vulnerable and curious creatures navigate the stage and the dangers that lurk in the inner city…

A strong proposal of a mask show with a lot of potential. Looking forward to see how it grows... The industry needs brave work like this.
Fun and cute show.. Nice to have an unusual theatre style with the masks
