Have you seen Zandile?
The play Have You Seen Zandile? was written by well known African storyteller, Gcina Mhlope. It was first performed in 1986 at The Market Theatre. The story follows the journey of a young girl called Zandile living with her grandmother. She then gets abducted from her granny’s house in Durban and taken to the Transkei by her mother, as she believes it is time for her to reap the benefits of having a girl child. Through this journey, Zandile is faced with various issues from having her periods and the myths surrounding that experience; meeting boys; friendship; marriage and also feeling the void of her grandmother’s absence.
The cast and director explore these personal memories through song, laughter and drama.
