When “The Search for Intelligent Signs of Life in the Universe” first played on Broadway in the 80’s, it was an instant bestseller and won numerous awards. Described as a “hilarious critique of modern society … sidesplitting ….. so vibrant, so alive, so beloved …”, this timeless piece is as relevant today as ever.

Wickedly funny, wildly satirical and bravely poignant, this classic is once again brought to life by Steven Feinstein in a way which will trigger thoughtful reflection long after the laughter and tears have abated.
Feinstein directs Michelle Douglas in this rich tapestry of compelling characters, male and female; giving the play a fresh new look in its timeless and universal appeal. The audience is given a moving glimpse into the lives of wonderfully recognizable characters; from Chrissy the gym bunny, addicted to personal improvement, to coke-addicted sperm-donors with different coloured eyes, to unfulfilled housewives, to feminists in search of higher consciousness and more trail mix, to jaded-yet-compassionate-prostitutes to Trudy the homeless Sage who communes with higher powers …. (Or does she?) …… as themes of isolation, loneliness, longing, the human heart and its search for meaning are explored; sometimes sensitively and sometimes with a bit more volume.

A comedy about the way we are, the work is compassionate without ever reverting to sentimentalism. Sometimes tragic, usually absurd, always personal; this one will clear the sinuses.

The production itself was very entertaining, although I need to mention that the seating is quite uncomfortable, which does have an impact on the overall experience.

Michelle Douglas's performance was captivating. She played 10 different characters so convincingly; it was pure theatrical genius! I thoroughly enjoyed it and hope for a longer run on an even much bigger stage.
