The Proposal | The Bear
The classics The Proposal and The Bear two short one act plays by Russian playwright Anton Chekhov find themselves re-captured and redeployed by Johannesburg based adaptor Lebogang Mpahlele.
Presented by the Drama for Life Creative Research Hub, these laugh a minute farces are duel cast and run as a double bill. With a stellar cast of Zethu Dlomo, Lebohang Motaung and up and coming powerhouse Thulani Mtsweni Johannesburg audiences are in for a treat.
In The Proposal, Chekhov finds himself muddled up in domestic life Soweto-style. Jabulani Dlamini wishes to propose to his neighbour’s daughter in order to lead a proper and respectable life, despite his heart palpitations and his constant fainting. Trouble ensues when the would-be couple cannot agree on anything and father Bra-Sipho has to intervene.
In The Bear, Nopilisi, a feisty widow spends her days in mourning crying for her long dead husband. Donning all the elegance and beauty of her black dress she stares out of the window in earnest, her beauty never far from her mind. Enter the whirlwind rage of Zilishumi, a would-be debt collector; he's come to call in her late husband's debt. As this duel of man vs woman escalates the production invites you to marvel in the ridiculousness of the human condition.
